Buxton Music, Speech and Drama Festival 2019
We are a Festival celebrating amateur music and drama performing, with opportunities for children, young people and adults to perform in both a competitive and non-competitive supportive environment and benefit from feedback.
The 2019 season is now open for business, click here to go to the syllabus page. You can then carry on to the On-line entry form page to enter yourself or your students.
This season’s dates will be:
- Saturday 11th May 2019
- Friday 17th May 2019
- Saturday 18th May 2019
Junior choir classes have been timetabled for the evening of May 17th. Instead of timed classes, the choirs will perform in a more random order with no break in between for adjudication (e.g. Junior choir, Middle, Senior, etc), more akin to a concert.
Following this, there will be a choral work shop taken by the adjudicator. The Committee have chosen 2 pieces of music for the workshop:
- I’m Goin’ Up a Yonder by Walter Hawkins, arr Martin Sirvatka, pub Boosey & Hawkes, 4-part treble voices. Click to see for an example.
- Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo by Michael Flanders & Joseph Horovitz, Novello Publishing, unison version. Click to see for an example.
The Winners’ Concert will be held on Saturday 15th June.
We use two locations, The Buxton Methodist Church, Chapel St, Buxton SK17 6HX and St John The Baptist Church, 6 St John’s Rd, Buxton SK17 6XN. As this map shows it takes around 7 minutes to walk between them but do be warned, Hall Bank is quite steep when climbing to the Methodist Church.
The Festival has always been run by a small group of committed people who are happy to give some of their time to ensure that it survives into its second century. If you would like to join us as a volunteer, please speak to any member of the committee, you will be made most welcome!
You may also like to consider becoming a Friend of the Festival. For £25 (or more if you would like to make a donation) you will receive free entry to all Festival events and free refreshments at the Winners’ Concert. To become a Friend drop an email to the treasurer, Charles Huff, on firstname.lastname@example.org, call our chairperson on 01298 24573 or speak to any member of the committee.
